Hearts of Iron III Review

Hearts of Iron III is a grand strategy game on a global scale that starts in 1936 and ends in 1947. It also includes a number of pre-set dates so players can jump right into the action after a key moment. Players can choose to lead any nation they want, from Canada to South Afrika to Japan, and will be in charge of selecting domestic policies, research goals, production priorities, diplomatic positions and army and navy orders. And while that's true of many grand strategy games, Hearts of Iron III gets down to such details as hiring and firing specific cabinet ministers, licensing designs for foreign production, building individual brigades, setting invasion times to take advantage of daylight and weather effects, and selecting sites for new rocket test labs.

The game also improves on the scripted history of Hearts of Iron II with the addition of new decisions and laws that come up according to preset conditions. So you may play a game where France holds out in a war against Vichy France, or where the US joins the Allies in 1937, or where Ecuador and Peru find themselves drawn into the alliances and wind up fighting their own war in South America. While the general alliances of the main powers are fixed, the game can go in many interesting directions from there. In one of our games, the Chinese crushed the Japanese invasion and Russia was able to liberate Europe by the end of 1943.

While it sounds like the player would soon get bogged down under such an avalanche of seemingly minor details, the sum total of all those individual details can add up to huge consequences. When facing a supply shortage, for instance, you may reduce consumer goods in order to trade other commodities on the world market in return for rare metals that your factories need. When they help increase production, you can start cranking out supplies for your soldiers, but dissent has risen because you cut consumer goods, so your population isn't producing as much as they were before. Now you need to balance your nation's industrial capacity between the two so your people are happy enough to keep working and your soldiers aren't left unsupplied on the battlefield. And that's not even considering that your factories are also responsible for upgrades and reserves for units in the field and for the production of new combat units, ports, radar stations and such.

It's not just the decisions you're making at a high level either. Hearts of Iron III has several thousand individually modeled territories, of which around 10,000 are on the land. That something like four times as many in the previous game in the series. While it may seem a bit overwhelming at first (and, face it; it is) the number of territories actually works to make the combat more tactical. Rather than having a front that's just a few territories across, you'll now be fighting on fronts that are 10-20 territories across. This means the attacker and defender will have smaller concentrations of units spread out over a wider area, which makes breakthroughs, flanks and envelopments even more sophisticated than before. Added infrastructure limits and supply needs make it impossible for players to create the capital-bound steamroller armies that appear in some other grand strategy games.

What Makes People Fall in Love

Psychologist Mark Kristal from the University of Buffalo explains the chemistry in romantic relationships. There are several types of chemistry required in romantic relationships,he says. It seems like a variety of different neurochemical processes and external stimuli have to click in the right complex and right sequence for someone to fall in love. The chemistry in romance requires certain elements of love.

   1. Smell. We fall in love partly because of smell. The scent of a bouquet of red roses, for instance, is a cultural preference that boosts the chemistry in romantic relationships. Dr Kristal says, Smell forms part of the framework that conforms to cultural attractiveness standards. For example, smelling like a strawberry instead of mildew [makes you attractive].Smelling delicious could be part of why we fall in love.
   2. Love pheromones. Invisible signals are part of what makes people fall in love. Pheromones are unlearned, and perhaps unsmellable, signals that enter the brain through the olfactory system. They can function in sex, alarm, territoriality, aggression, and fear, says Dr Kristal. He believes that we choose specific mates not solely due to pheromones, but for other reasons. Other sensory cues are better explanations for why we fall in love, such as touch, smell, and hearing.
   3. The brain. We fall in love partly because of hormones. Oxytocin and vasopressin are present when people fall in love and stay together for a long time. Dopamine is also part of the chemistry in romantic relationships. So, when youre wondering Why doesnt he love me? you may have to look to brain chemistry as the answer. Its not necessarily you, its just that your brain chemicals didnt mesh. Lack of hormones could explain why we fall inlove.

Can you make someone love you? Well, since the chemistry in romantic relationships is affected by smell, you could try approaching someone you like with a dozen roses or a mug of hot chocolate. And since the hormone oxytocin can be created by positive experiences, it might be smart to ensure all your interactions are pleasant ones.

Just remember that the chemistry in romantic relationships doesnt change who you are as a person. Sally in When Harry Met Sally was just as beautiful, smart and funny after her ex-boyfriend married someone else.

Ten Cool Things to do with your Sony PSP

The reason why Ive not been blogging: I got a Sony PSP. I got mine from Target where used a 10% off coupon, and I got it there so that I could exchange it until I got a perfect unit. Yes, for some poor reason, Sonys PSP has beautiful screens that are prone to dead pixels, pits in the LCD glass, or even particles under the glass that you cant rub off. I had to go through six units until I found a better one, much thanks the patience of Target staff members!

Not wanting to end up with another black white elephant, Ive been trying to figure out what else I could do with it besides playing expensive games or storing video, photos and music. So far no ones been able to crack the PSP signature encryption which prevents running of homebrew applications, but in the mean time, there are several other things you can do with your PSP, particularly if you have a Mac.

Taking the cue from Kottkes 50 Fun Things To Do With Your iPod, heres my 10 Cool Things To Do With Your Sony PSP

   1. Syncing Videos, Photos, Music
By far the best Mac application for this is PSPWare ($15). Not only does it sync your music, movies and photos, but it backs up your game saves too. It handles video particularly well as PSPWare supports every common movie format (MOV, MPG, AVI, WMV, VOB) so you can easily prepare your DVD library for watching on your PSPs 16:9 wide aspect ratio screen. Highly recommended above other competing syncing and video encoding tools, including iPSP ($20).
   2. Reading Text files
PSPBook is an open source software program for Mac OS X that allows you to convert text documents into JPEG images so that it is readable on the Sony PSP handheld gaming system. So far Ive used this to convert a GameFAQ walkthrough for Metal Gear Ac!d so I can check it anytime I get stuck in a level.
   3. Reading Comics
eigoManga.com features 60 pages of full-color original manga available for Sony PSP. Check out the stories featured in PSP PAK Issue 1! Seven Seas Entertainment has released free downloadable manga specifically converted for viewing on the PSP. Thing is, Seven Seas only released the first chapters for their four flagships titles: Amazing Agent Luna, Blade for Barter, Last Hope and No Mans Land. Each preview consists of 30 to 40 pages of the story. PSPcmx.com is another great source for PSP-optimized comic books and manga by premier independent publishers. Finally, 8BitJoystick has a wonderful visual tutorial which explains How to Read Web Comics on a PlayStation Portable via a Mac or PC.
   4. Reading Magazines
How about a downloadable PSP magazine that you can read from your PSPs screen? Check out PSPOMAG for a high quality widescreen publication on PSP gaming. Here is the direct download page for the first two issues. Another gaming magazine to check out is Gamers Heaven magazine which features original gaming articles across gaming consoles. For a more general selection of magazines, see pspmagazines.com where the author shares all kinds of PSP-formatted magazines for download, including sexy content from MAXIM, FHM, Stuff, IGN.com, Gamespot.com, Sports Illustrated plus some PSP formatted movie trailers.
   5. Bringing Porn Anywhere
The Babeo'matic Portable Gallery features non-nude photos of popular models and movie stars just for your PSP. For a more traditional source of PSP porn, check out Playboy Station Portable by playboy.com. For the lazy ones, check here for a direct download without the need for registration.
   6. Replacing your TV
Forget your TV! Besides the Sony Connect site, you can now get PSP formatted videos from the following places:
      - AtomFilms has a section with downloadable PSP movies, but some require a memory stick larger than the standard 32meg one. Lengths range from 7 to 16 minutes. Three of the titles currently available are, In God We Trust, Football, and Rockfish.
      - Heavy made a decent library of hours of entertaining animation and live-action video shorts available for free download on the PSP.
      - Music network Fuse offers PSP owners downloadable content such as the countdown show Daily Download and music showcase Stevens Untitled Rock Show.
      - 29PSP Video Guide offers a daily download of video media, including music videos and movie trailers.
      - GameSpots PSP Resource Center features gaming video reviews formatted for your PSP.
   7. Ghetto Music Boombox
Turn it into an MP3 boombox and let everyone know you own the hottest toy in the neighborhood. Just add this PSP Stereo Amplifier. It might not be the loudest speakers around, but its portable and looks pretty mean.
   8. Playing Multiplayer Games via the Internet
Cant meet up with friends to play multiplayer PSP games with? How about playing games with other PSP owners via the Internet. XLink Kai is a global gaming network that brings together XBox, Playstation 2, Gamecube and PSP users, in one integrated community. It is software running on your PC, Macintosh or even your Linux router that allows you to play system-link enabled games online for free. Heres a quick Mac to PSP Guide to setting it up. I finally had fun playing with real human players in Wipeout Pure!
   9. Surf the Internet
The PSP comes with built-in 802.11b wifi capability that lets you to play games with other PSP users nearby. It also connects to the Internet though you cant do much since theres no built-in e-mail program or Web browser. However, the game Wipeout Pure contains a basic Web browser. Its only there to access a single page containing game updates. Heres a trick to surf the Internet (more or less you need to be close to a Wi-Fi hotspot for this to work:

          1. On the PSP, go to Network Settings.
          2. Select Infrastructure mode. Create a new connection and give it a name.
          3. Enter the name, or SSID, of the Wi-Fi hotspot and the password if necessary.
          4. Select the Custom address setting. You can usually leave IP Address Setting to Automatic.
          5. For DNS Setting, select Manual. Enter the Primary DNS 67.171.70.72. This points to a computer set up by Jonathan Terleski, a student at Carnegie Mellon. It replaces the Sony page with a page that has links to Google, Yahoo and other useful sites.
          6. Set it not to use a proxy.
          7. Save the network settings. Make sure the Wi-Fi switch on the left side of the PSP is on.
          8. Fire up Wipeout Pure. Go to the Downloads section and select the connection you just created. That should take you online, unless traffic is overwhelming the portal page. If it doesnt work immediately, try a few hours later. Not all pages will work in the browser, but hey: you have a PSP and youre online.

  10. Scanning for WiFi networks
Your Sony PSP can scan for wireless networks and provide you with a decent wireless report. From the PSP Home button, you can go into Network Settings, then select Infrastructure, make a New Connection, then go through the settings until you get to WLAN Settings. This is where you simply select Encryption None or WEP, depending on which kind of wireless youd like to find, then hit Scan. Youll get SSID, Encryption type, and Signal Strength. Pretty nifty stuff using your PSP as a portable WiFi scanner if youre deciding if its worth taking your laptop out.
  11. Explosive PSP Grenade (Okay heres a stupid trick!)
The PSP battery lasts about 4-5hrs, but under constant gameplay, youd get about 2.5hrs or so. The Pelican Power Brick let you extend your playtime at half the cost of buying a second PSP battery. However, you can make yourself an explosive PSP if you use this Pelican Power Brick in an inappropriate manner, just as what happened to this guy on his birthday.

Clearly theres more PSP trick out there, including listening to podcasts and tracking videoblogs. Id love it if you could add your ideas in the comments and Ill include good ones as an update to this article.

By Daniel Emery
Technology Reporter, BBC News

The warning applies to versions 6, 7 and 8 of Internet Explorer

The German government has warned web users to find an alternative browser to Internet Explorer to protect security.

The warning from the Federal Office for Information Security comes after Microsoft admitted IE was the weak link in recent attacks on Google's systems.

Microsoft rejected the warning, saying that the risk to users was low and that the browsers' increased security setting would prevent any serious risk.

However, German authorities say that even this would not make IE fully safe.

Thomas Baumgaertner, a spokesman for Microsoft in Germany, said that while they were aware of the warning, they did not agree with it, saying that the attacks on Google were by "highly motivated people with a very specific agenda".

"These were not attacks against general users or consumers," said Mr Baumgaertner.

"There is no threat to the general user, consequently we do not support this warning," he added.

Microsoft says the security hole can be shut by setting the browser's security zone to "high", although this limits functionality and blocks many websites.

However, Graham Cluley of anti-virus firm Sophos, told BBC News that not only did the warning apply to 6, 7 and 8 of the browser, but the instructions on how to exploit the flaw had been posted on the internet.

"This is a vulnerability that was announced in the last couple of days. Microsoft have no patch yet and the implication is that this is the same one that exploited on the attacks on Google earlier this week," he said.

Computer expert Alan Stevens: "It's like having a window left open in your house"

"The way to exploit this flaw has now appeared on the internet, so it is quite possible that everyone is now going to have a go."

Microsoft traditionally release a security update once a month - the next scheduled patch is the 9th of February. However, a spokesman for Microsoft told BBC News that developers for the firm were trying to fix the problem.

"We are working on an update on this issue and this may well involve an out of cycle security update," he said.

Sixty thousand people protest against pollution

Beijing (AsiaNews/Agencies) About 60,000 people came to the village of Huaxi (Zhejiang province) to protest against high, local levels of pollution.

The demonstrators said they would not budge until the government either moved or closed the 13 chemical plants which have polluted the water and ground around the village.

Police barred reporters from the scene, but locals reached by telephone said that "yesterday the crowd had reached at least 50,000 or 60,000 people".

For two years, Huaxi residents have petitioned the government to move the factories whose emissions have made agriculture virtually impossible, forcing farmers to seek other forms of employment.

The situation precipitated on April 10 when about 3,000 law enforcement officers descended on the village to break up the protest that had started on March 24 when a group of elderly people, mostly women, set up roadblocks on the road leading to the factories.

Unconfirmed reports about two people dying in the clashes between demonstrators and police have added fuel to the fire.

People began overturning police cars and breaking windows with police officers responding using truncheons and stun guns.

Many villagers are outraged at the fact that many local officials are said to own stocks in the 13 chemical plants.

Local, state-controlled press have instead said that officials are very concerned by environmental issues and have compensated farmers who suffered losses from contaminated emissions.

A local paper reported that the police decided to break up the protests on Sunday because they were worried that "the coming of cold air and a dramatic temperature drop threatened the health of feeble old women."

Pollution in China is much more than an environmental issue; it is increasingly becoming a social problem as well.

The riot in Huaxi is more a symptom of a widening social unrest that is spreading throughout the Chinese countryside.

Niu Wenyuan, director of the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Institute of Policy and Management, warned that the country is facing more environmental pressures as rural areas became more urbanised. (MA)
